BB&T shining a “beacon of hope” - Local nonprofit recipient of BB&T’s companywide Lighthouse Project 10/5/2009 -
CHARLOTTESVILLE – Scott & Stringfellow’s Charlottesville office recently donated $600 to the Charlottesville Soup Kitchen. The Soup Kitchen is a joint effort by local churches to provide individuals with a hot meal five days per week. The downtown churches prepare hot lunches for the program. The local churches involved are First Baptist Church, First Presbyterian Church, First United Methodist Church, Christ Episcopal Church and Holy Comforter Catholic Church. Each church serves one day per week. The Salvation Army serves on weekends. There are many volunteers who donate food, shop, cook, serve and provide fellowship to the weekly guests. Those who visit are gracious and appreciative.
The donation was the local office’s Lighthouse Project, part of a company-wide effort. Scott & Stringfellow’s parent company, BB&T Corporation, allocated funds for the Charlottesville office to use toward a charitable endeavor of the associates’ choosing. The office selected the Charlottesville Soup Kitchen, which serves 91 individuals per week.
This local contribution is part of the BB&T Lighthouse Project, the company’s largest community-service initiative in its 137-year history. The philanthropic effort involves 30,000 employees donating 60,000 volunteer hours to complete more than 1,000 community-service projects. BB&T also contributed $3 million to the effort, in addition to BB&T’s normal annual giving. The BB&T Foundation provided more than $20 million in 2008 to its communities through the United Way and numerous other organizations.
